  • Lou Gehrig’s long-time record falls as Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 2131st consecutive game.
Football
  • The San Francisco 49ers win Super Bowl XXIX, beating San Diego, 49-26.
Golf
  • Ben Crenshaw won The Masters
  • Corey Pavin took the US Open
  • John Daly was the British Open winner.
  • Steve Elkington won the PGA Championship

The PGA top money winner was Greg Norman with $1,654,959. The PGA Champions Tour leading money winner was Jim Colbert with $1,444,386.

On the Women’s side, Annika Sörenstam was the US Women’s Open winner. She also was the top money winner, earning $666,533. Kelly Robbins won the LPGA Championship.

Auto Racing
  • Jeff Gordon won the NASCAR championship.
  • Sterling Marlin was the Daytona 500 champ.
  • Jacques Villeneuve took home the Indy 500 trophy and the CART racing season championship
  • Scott Karlitta won the NHRA “Top Fuel” championship.
